Chapter 1

Spring Follows Winter

A shaft of sunlight broke through a leaden sky and played its way along the tree line of the Southern Alps. A solitary Haast eagle soared high in the quiet air until at last it disappeared from view among the mountain tops. And then. Far below. A bellbird sang. As clear as a raindrop. As pure as the morning dew.

Thursday 25th November 2004

Alexander Montgomery Stewart sat on the elevated wooden decking of the Lake Caroline hut and quietly embraced the spectacular view laid out before him. Snow capped mountain peaks, stretching from north to south, were crisply reflected in the stillness of the lake nearby. It had been a particularly hard day on the Ailsa Track for a man of somewhat mature years who had not had time to prepare himself properly for such an arduous exercise. In a few days, the ninth of December to be exact, he would be fifty years of age. Fifty not out. A pretty average knock by today's standards, but Alexander was content. He had already had a very eventful life and there was no reason to complain.

Apart from bloody Osama that was. Or was it his Taleban friends? Or even the Afghan warlords themselves? He couldn't be sure. But a rare opportunity for him to replenish his empty coffers had unexpectedly and rapidly disappeared down the proverbial drain. As he sat there reflecting on the situation he could not decide whether to be angry or elated. The adrenaline rush of Afghanistan versus the unparalleled vista before him. In such circumstances there was only one obvious solution.............

I was drawn into the story and wanted to find out what happened next.........Alexandra Stephens.

I have really enjoyed reading your book and as I got into it I read faster and faster!.......I had moisture in my eyes towards the end! I loved it......Charles Deane

Track is a cracking story with some interesting characters and relationships. You create the mountain mood well and show convincingly how quickly people bond in those circumstances.....You have a really gripping story......I found it quite a page turner!......Patricia Mernagh.

A nice light read, more a woman's book than a man's. I enjoyed it more than the Life of Pi, Angela's Ashes, The Colour, and The Bone People.......Snooky Lane.

A sensitive story depicting a very personal struggle with life's emotions and encounters. I enjoyed it.......Elizabeth Blake

Have just finished your story and have to say I really enjoyed it.....You've actually created something with a life of its own.........Julian Sutherland Beatson

Congratulations. I thoroughly enjoyed Track. Everything stopped for me. I was transported onto snow capped peaks and the silver-white stillness, struggling with gentle emotions which I could relate to. A compulsive read with an explosive ending. Brilliant...........Patricia Simmonds

Finally finished your book. It's wonderful and maybe it is like you said, more for people who know NZ and that have been there and lost their heart to the wonderful nature, people and history..........Esther Vitt

Just to say I have finished your book, and thought it was brilliant!.......Sue Attrell
